All athletes face the same challenges and the same types of mental performance strategies can help them improve, regardless of their sport, age, or level. In its simplest form, sports performance counseling is just like any other kind of therapy: first, you assess where your athlete is at in the now; then, you create a plan to consistently improve his or her weaknesses and turn them into strengths. As your sports health and performance therapist, we will have sessions where we will talk about the challenges you face and dig deeper into why your performance isn't what it needs to be. This is where your mental gaps become clearer. Good therapy requires more than just randomly discussing ways to keep you motivated. It also requires more than just talking about how some professional athlete gets their job done. Good therapy is just like any other form of therapy and in its most basic formula, it has three core components: it is personalized, specific, and intentional. I tell my clients at the very first appointment that I am going to make intentional, consistent effort to help them with the mental side of performance. My approach is very solution and education-focused, and I greatly enjoy teaching my athletes how to master the mental skills they need to succeed and overcome obstacles. In working together, it is my goal to help you perform your best when it matters most.
As an attentive sports performance specialist, I look for patterns. By patterns, I mean patterns over a period of time. I observe how some strategies work really well in a variety of scenarios. This process involves collaboration with my clients and it begins by setting meaningful, achievable short-term goals they can pour all of their effort into.
I work consistently with my clients to:
Create and modify winning habits, behaviors, and routines.
Overcome mental barriers that limit performance.
Maintain focus and discipline in the face of adversity.
Foster consistent motivation and energy.
Develop unshakeable confidence.
Clients learn to accomplish this through:
Positive self-talk
Managing emotional energy
Relaxation skills
Managing distractions
Calming the inner mental-audience members
Consistent present moment awareness
Rehearsed visualization for performance
When it comes to helping my clients reach peak potential and reach their goals, there are endless things that can be focused on - from strength training and conditioning to nutrition. And those things are important. But NONE of them will make up for a lack of preparation and skill on the mental side of performance.

"My teenage son has been working with Mrs. Latham and I think this is all really helping him mentally and emotionally to realize he's good enough to play at a good school" - KT* "I was so nervous trying to get my daughter in to see a therapist for her sports performance issues but I am so glad I did! Amy has worked with my daughter on the mental aspects of getting out of her head and playing like a champion. We were so worried that our daughter would not be able to bounce back after a series of setbacks and sports injuries but after working with Amy, she really has been playing incredibly. My daughter has said she feels different mentally and is so excited to be joining a Division 1 program next year. Thank you, Amy! " - HM*
"When I thought of what therapists do, I thought they would be examining me with all my issues just to make some money and tell me I had trauma. When I met Ms. Amy my expectations of what therapy would be like shattered. As a pro-athlete my job has me on the road, at practice, in meetings, and training all year round. Ms. Amy understands the athlete lifestyle and we just click. She has helped me gain more perspective on my game than any of my coaches and I believe I have become a better athlete overall because of what she has taught me. I'm bringing home the W for you, Ms. A!" - RW*
"Our daughter has been working with Amy for just a short amount of time and we are already seeing some amazing results! We are thrilled to see the improvement in her focus during the game. Our daughter who was seriously struggling with her mental focus and having panic attacks before games has started to become this confident and calm athlete. We knew that our daughter was really able to learn the skills from Amy when she began using her voice to lead her teammates, she started taking more shots and moved on if she did or didn't make them and was totally focused. We love Amy!" - PJ* "My anxiety was through the roof trying to transition from playing college ball to the NFL. Ms. Amy has helped me get my mind back into the game and I will carry the skills she has taught me with me for life" - GL*
